Junior Camper Badge Activity

Knots to Know!

Whether you’ll be hiking, boating, or sitting around a campfire, learn a special skill that might come in handy at camp: knot tying!

Activity Details

Time needed: 15 minutes per knot

Materials needed:

  • Nylon or cotton rope
(For camping, you’ll want to bring several feet of rope. For this activity, you’ll only need a 12- to 18-inch piece to practice knot tying.)

Setup: Knots can be used to hang up gear, to tie tent flaps, to connect a boat to a dock, and for lots of cool crafts. Follow a tutorial in a guidebook or online or ask an older Girl Scout or other expert to teach you some basic knots, such as the square knot, the clove hitch, and the bowline.

Activity: Use online videos to learn how to tie these useful knots:

1.     Overhand knot

2.     Round turn and two half hitches

3.     Clove hitch

4.     Square / reef knot

5.     Sheet bend

6.     Bowline
