Activity Details

Time needed: 30 minutes

Materials needed:

  • Found objects
  • Markers
  • Papers

Setup: Creating trail signs and marking a trail for family or friends to follow is a great way to teach the observation skills needed during a hike while have having fun.

Activity: This activity works well both outdoors using found objects or indoors using art supplies. Similar to following the clues on a scavenger hunt, you can create the symbols found on a trail to lead ‘hikers’ from the start of the trail to the end. Create directional signs and symbols that depict steep inclines, danger, switchbacks, rest stops, and wildlife awareness. Use found objects from around the house or outdoors to create trail signs. You may choose to draw symbols on paper or create symbols using twigs, leaves, and rocks found on the ground.

Troop Leaders:  The instructions for all badge steps are available free of charge in your  Girl Scout Volunteer Toolkit.

Girl Scouts at Home activities have been adapted from existing Girl Scout programming and optimized for use at home during a period of social distancing.
