Activity Details
Time needed: 30–45 minutes
Materials needed:
- Cooking equipment
- Stove and counter or tabletop
- Parents: this activity may require you to cut the tops off apples and use a microwave or stove
Setup: Today we get to try cooking for outdoor camping trips. Now, imagine you and your friends are going cabin camping. We are going to try a recipe today that you may want to do again when you go camping, and this activity will complete one of the steps of your Cabin Camper badge. Sometime in the year ahead, you may get to go camping with your friends or family, so let’s get ready to cook!
Activity: First, you need to:
1) Ask an adult to be in the room with you the whole time.
2) Review the two recipe options below and decide which one you’ll do.
3) Find the ingredients and put them out on a counter or table so you’re ready to cook
Recipe #1: Walking Salad (This salad is called a walking salad because it can be eaten while hiking.)
Ingredients:
- 2 apples
- 1 tablespoon raisins or dried cranberries
- 1 tablespoon nuts
- 2 teaspoons mayonnaise
- 1/3 cup cottage cheese
Steps:
1. With adult help, cut off the tops of the apples, saving the tops.
2. Using a spoon or peeler, core the apples, scoop out the insides, remove the seeds, and save the apple pieces. With a spoon, you can do this little by little.
3. Mix the apples, cottage cheese, raisins or cranberries, and nuts with the mayonnaise.
4. Stuff the mixture inside the apple shells and put the top back on, fastening with toothpicks if needed.
Recipe #2: Blushing Bunny
Ingredients:
- 2 teaspoons butter or margarine
- 3 teaspoons flour
- One can tomato soup
- 2 slices cheese (any variety)
- 4 slices toast
Steps:
1. In a microwave or on the stove, melt butter
2. Add flour to melted butter and blend well
3. Add UNDILUTED soup
4. Heat this until thoroughly warm but not boiling (low heat)
5. While the mixture is heating, dice the cheese slices or tear the cheese into small bits.
6. Add the cheese to the pot. Stir gently until melted.
7. Toast 4 slices of bread
8. Serve the tomato mixture over toasted bread
Now, let’s gather up our cooking equipment (video tip: show them what you will be using, based on the recipe). You can tie back your hair if it’s long. Then, tie an apron or kitchen towel around your waist. Ready to cook??
Take your time with each step, be very careful with your cooking equipment, and have fun.
Reflection:
Before you eat your great food, I want you to answer a couple of questions. You can share your answers with the adult who is with you there.
- So, did you do anything during this activity that you’d never done before?
- What did you like best about cooking today?
- If you were going camping with Brownie friends, what would you like to have to eat?
Now it’s time to try what you made!
